Good afternoon,
This week’s Backpack Express is all set for you. Happy Reading!
Sick Children: We are starting to see an increase in the number of sick students at our school. Some students are testing positive for flu; while others have fevers that last a couple days. Along with our cleaning, a big way to stop the spread of illness is to keep sick children home from school. Here are a few reminders for you:
If your child is out sick, they cannot come to school. Everyone needs to be fever free WITHOUT fever reducing medication for 24 hours.
Your child should not be medicated because they don’t feel well and then sent to school. The medication wears off around 11:30, and for many students, they end up in the nurse’s office feeling sick once again.
If your child is sick at school, you will be called to pick up your child. It is important for the health of all students, faculty, and staff at our school that you come pick up your child right away. If you cannot make it, please have a back-up person able to come pick up your child.
We know children (and adults) can have lingering coughs. If your child feels fine otherwise and the cough will not interfere with their learning, they can come to school.
If you are not sure if you child should come to school, feel free to reach out our school nurse teacher, Mrs. Mungovan, and speak with her.

PTO Parents Night Out: The PTO would like to invite parents to a gathering on January 29, 2025, from 6:00 PM - 9:00 PM. It’s a way for Sowams parents to get together to hang out with friends and to meet new friends but it’s also a great opportunity for the PTO to thank everyone who volunteered/donated to the Sowams Octoberfest and other school-wide activities. Information about the Parents Night Out may be found here.
Breathing Strategies: At our last PTO meeting, Mrs. Squatrito presented information on what we are doing for social emotional learning. We spoke about various breathing strategies that we teach our students. Various people asked for a copy of the breathing strategies so I am sharing them with you here.
Have a wonderful day.
Best,
Jim Callahan
Principal
