April was a productive month for Barrington Public Schools. State assessments, spring athletics, state competitions, and many classroom learning successes kept our students and our schools very busy in April - and there are still many days of instruction and events to look forward to this school year.
As we leave April behind, I would like to share with you some noteworthy accomplishments that represent our district’s commitment to collaborative teaching and learning.
Barrington High School was named one of the best schools in the nation by the U.S. News and World Report with a ranking of 217 out of more than 17,600 schools. National recognition like this is the shared result of our staff members throughout Barrington Public Schools who empower our students to excel; our students who work hard and commit to learning; and our supportive Barrington community who provide the resources and supports for BPS to deliver high-quality educational opportunities.
Nearly 70% of Barrington High School students participate in Advanced Placement (AP) courses during their time at BHS. With AP exams approaching, students have been hard at work preparing to showcase their knowledge!
Deeper learning is central to a Barrington Public Schools education. This month, students in the Barrington Middle School STEAM Studio used 3D design to create an assistive rowing device for their classmate!
Barrington experienced 92% coverage during the recent solar eclipse and BPS provided all students and staff with special eclipse-viewing glasses. Our community safely watched this historic event together!
The Barrington Middle School chess team recently finished their first season of competitive play with a big win at the Ocean State Chess Association's Middle School League Championship! Read more about the chess team’s accomplishment here.
For the fourteenth year in a row, the Science Olympiad team at Barrington High School won first place in the Rhode Island Science Olympiad Tournament! They will be heading to Michigan next month to compete in the nationals.
The HOPE Club is doing important peer to peer education outreach. This month, they helped their peers make healthy choices by hosting an Anti-Vaping Day and sharing about the dangers of teen vaping.
Sowams School third graders welcomed a visitor from the Rhode Island Department of Education: Commissioner Infante-Green! The Commissioner read with our smart and inquisitive students and answered all of their questions about education.
Motor vehicle safety and maintenance skills are important for young drivers. Thanks to our School Resource Officer, Officer Joel, and the Barrington Police Department for organizing a skills training session with AAA Northeast for our teenage drivers!
Barrington Middle School’s Science Olympiad team took home third place at the state tournament! Check out pictures of the team here.
Students across our district participated in the Rhode Island History Day Contest, presenting projects they have worked on since the beginning of the school year. Five Barrington High School students will be heading to the National History Day competition in Maryland in June!
Our Barrington Public Schools volunteers are the backbone of our district. We recently celebrated our volunteers with a special breakfast featuring music and entertainment by two talented BHS students!

The school year is winding down but we have so many activities still to look forward to over the next two months: sporting events, music concerts, theatrical performances, senior prom, bridging ceremonies and graduation, just to name a few. As we enter the final stretch of the school year, I remain proud of our students who commit to their learning and our educators who empower our students to excel every day. I am excited to see what our community accomplishes together in May and thank you for your continued support of Barrington Public Schools.
Thank you,
Mike Messore
