There is a lot of information in today’s Backpack Express. Please make sure you read through the whole email.
Octoberfest Update: The big day is coming up very soon. October 17th will be here before you know it. Here’s the latest information that I sent out earlier today.
New at Sowams This Year: Last year, we sent a survey to parents asking for feedback about Sowams. There were two bits of feedback mentioned several times in the survey: 1. Parents wanted more information about how their child is doing in school. 2. Parents wanted to know what’s happening in art, music, library, and health/PE. Based on that feedback, two things are happening:
Mid-Trimester Feedback: Teachers will be sending home additional feedback throughout the year, midway through each trimester. You will receive two glows (skills your child is doing well with) and one grow (a skill your child could use some additional help with). Parents will receive the first mid-trimester feedback form between October 13-23.
Specialist Update: Each week in Backpack Express, you will be able to read an update from one of our specialists. This week, Ms. Carden and Mrs. Kulis (our art teachers) have provided this update with you about what’s happening in art class.
PTO Directory: Our PTO is putting together a family directory. If you are interested in having your information in the Directory, you may complete this form. Once the Directory is available, we will share the link.
Third Grade Student Council: Mrs. Adamson and Mrs. Fagan are starting a Student Council with our third graders. Third grade parents should read this letter from the teachers in order to complete a form about your child’s interest in participating.
October PTO Calendar: The PTO has created an October calendar with the different events occurring. You may access the calendar here.
From the PTO: Brown Football Youth Day vs. Bryant on Saturday, October 10 at 12 PM at Brown Stadium: a fun afternoon at Brown Stadium with several Youth Day experiences for kids and families, including exclusive postgame autographs with Brown Football student-athletes and a Brown Football schedule poster for all kids. Children who register by Thursday, October 8 at 12 PM will also receive a Brown Football jersey keychain! $10 general admission for Sowams families via this link - Youth Day Registration Link
Flu Shot Clinics: Our district is hosting two upcoming flu shot clinics. The first one is October 20, 2026, at Barrington Middle School. The second clinic will take place November 17, 2026, at Hampden Meadows School. Information about the clinics, including how to register, may be found here.
Parent Engagement Series: This great program continues on October 27, 2026, at 6:00 in the evening at Barrington Middle School. The topic for this session is Parent Child Communication–Building Boundaries. Information about the series may be found here.
Community Notices: There are a couple notices: BYBA and Barrington High School’s Science Olympiad Spooky Trail fundraiser.
